Diabetes Education Training

11/18/2019
8:00am - 12:30pm

Liberty BOE

Hinesville, Georgia

Several systems requested that a regional Diabetes Education Training be held this fall. The school nurse is the preferred person to provide care for a student with diabetes.  Many schools do not have a full time nurse or the nurse is not always available to provide direct care during the school day.  Additional school personnel will be needed to be prepared to perform diabetes care tasks when a school nurse or other health care personnel is not available.  According to the Georgia Code other school personnel are not required to be a health care professional (“trained diabetes personnel” means a school employee who volunteers to be trained in accordance with the Code).  Georgia law, specifically O.C.G.A. § 20-2-779, requires each school to train at least two school employees in the care needed for students with diabetes. In additional school systems shall provide information in the recognition of diabetes related emergency situations to all bus drivers responsible for the transportation of a student with diabetes.  If you have trained staff in place or your school nurse provides the “volunteer lay personnel” training, they do not have to attend this training.  This training is for new personnel you want to receive the training ~ or personnel who might benefit from an update.

Each school nurse will be responsible for directing and supervising the “designated school volunteer lay person” at their school.  There are certain clinical functions that the lay person will need to demonstrate and be checked off by their school nurse. These functions will be a part of the training agenda.  Since students may use different insulin pumps, glucagon, etc, it is best for the school nurse to work directly with their lay person on those skills.

The registration deadline is November 11, 2019. Space will be limited, so please register early. If the minimum number of participants does not register, the training will be cancelled. If you have any questions, please contact: Irene Denmark or Dee Ann Roesel at First District RESA ~ Safe, Healthy, and Supportive Schools Program ~ 912-842-5000.
